Having good material to teach and evaluate your students is very important. It is also very hard to find suitable material for almost any class. The material has to be based in the class, the context, the units etc. for this reason it is hard to find an activity that can be fun, helps the children learn and helps the teacher evaluate the students at the same time. with this in mind I created a really good activity for the children of a particular school.
these kids live around the school. Is not a big school so everyone knows each other. They live in a middle socio-economical level, but there are some that have less than others. The institution is a well balanced school. Pretty clean and not very big.
The students in this particular group were very noisy. But the teacher said they were responsible. They were really into learning, reacted very well to all activities, including mine. They are not rude, nor mean, are very lovely and respectful. The teacher is very easy going with them, very kind and patient. Even so, she manages to be firm, responsible and put a lot of attention to each and everyone of the 35 students.
The English class in particular is in a middle-low level of English. The kids are in fourth grade of elementary school. So the level of English is some what related to the age and grade of the students. The contents they see are very related to Ensenada and the context they live in. the course is very communicative, so it isn’t hard to work with them. The only thing missing is some evaluation. That is why I designed this material. Specifically to evaluate these children without them even knowing they were being evaluated.
The material I created its called ‘stand run and write’ because that basically what they do. This a game, or fun activity in which the kids interact with each other, write and get evaluated, all at the same time. It is a really fun activity, but for some students may be a little hard. The objective is for the children to put in practice what the have learned in the class. The material consists in 3 boxes, each box contains different words in little pieces of paper. Each box represents a verb, an adjective and a noun. All the verbs, adjectives and nouns in the boxes they should already know because they were taken from their textbook. The class gets divided in 2 teams, each team mate must go to the whiteboard and chose one word from each box, after that he has to write a sentence or question with all three words. Each team gets 3 points for each correct and complete sentence and 4 for each correct and complete question. They get 2 for each question or sentence that only include 2 words. This way they learn to think faster and the teacher can evaluate them one by one as they go.
This activity was a total success. Some students were really slow and kind of confused the first round. But the second they got it right. It was good to see that
